Moving to Dubai as a Creative? Here's What Recruiters Actually looking For in 2026
Relocating to the UAE as a creative in 2026? Here's what recruiters actually looking for, from the "UAE experience" trap to why your portfolio needs numbers, not just nice work.

Moving to Dubai as a Creative? Here's What Recruiters Actually Screen For in 2026
Every few months, someone in my network messages me the same line: "Thinking of making the move to Dubai, any advice?"
I'm going through that move myself right now, which is exactly why this isn't the usual "I made it, here's my playbook" post. Most advice out there is outdated anyway, built for a UAE hiring market that existed five years ago, where a strong reel and a confident cover letter got you in the room. That market is gone.
What I can offer instead is the read: the pattern-analysis a strategist does on any market before stepping into it, applied, in real time, to my own move. That's the actual job. Here's what the pattern looks like right now.

The "UAE Experience" Catch-22 Is Real, But It's Not What You Think
Scan enough job listings for creative, marketing, or brand roles in Dubai and one line repeats constantly: UAE market experience preferred, or a portfolio that proves equivalent depth.
Most candidates read that as a wall. It isn't. It's an invitation to substitute one kind of proof for another. Recruiters aren't asking "have you physically worked here?", they're asking "do you already understand a market where one campaign might need to speak to a Filipino nurse, an Emirati executive, and a British expat in the same city, sometimes the same week?"
If you've worked across sectors or diverse audiences anywhere, regional brands, multi-cultural client bases, category switches, that's your equivalent. Name it explicitly. Don't wait for them to infer it.
Multi-Sector Fluency Is the New Senior-Level Signal
Look closely at what's being asked for in Dubai's better creative and marketing roles right now: strategic vision, hands-on creative leadership, the ability to connect brand work to business KPIs, and comfort moving across categories, hospitality one quarter, retail the next.
The UAE's conglomerate structure makes this the norm, not the exception. A single group can hold a car dealership, a restaurant chain, and a wellness brand under one roof, and expect the same strategist to move fluidly between them. If your career has been built inside one narrow vertical, that's the gap to close before you land, not after.
AI Fluency Has Quietly Become Non-Negotiable
This one's new even by last year's standards. AI and digital fluency now sits next to "strategic vision" as a baseline requirement in serious marketing and brand roles, not a nice-to-have buried at the bottom of the listing. Recruiters aren't asking if you can write a prompt, they're asking if AI tools have changed how fast and how well you produce strategy, not just content.
If your portfolio or CV doesn't signal this at all, you're being read as a step behind before the interview starts.

Your Portfolio Needs Numbers, Not Just Nice Work
"A portfolio of projects characterized by concrete, numeric outcomes" is practically a template phrase in UAE job listings now. Good creative isn't the differentiator anymore, everyone applying has good creative. What's rare is a portfolio that says this campaign moved footfall by X or this repositioning shifted brand recall in Y months, not just this campaign looked great.
Before you touch your CV, go back through your best work and find the number. If there genuinely isn't one, that's worth knowing now, you can start tracking it in your current role before you make the jump.
Practical Groundwork Before You Apply
- Rebuild your CV for the UAE reader. Recruiters here skim fast, lead with brand names, sectors, and outcomes, not job titles and duties.
- Get your portfolio to load in seconds, not minutes. Slow, heavy portfolio sites lose attention before the work is even seen.
- Signal relocation intent clearly. A CV or LinkedIn header that doesn't mention you're actively relocating gets deprioritized in favour of candidates already on the ground.
- Network before you need to. A large share of senior creative and brand roles in the UAE move through referrals before they're ever posted publicly.

The Real Filter
Strip away the job descriptions and the actual filter is this: can you operate across categories, prove it with numbers, and show you're already thinking the way AI-native marketing teams think? Candidates who can answer yes to all three aren't competing in the same pool as everyone else scrolling Indeed and Bayt.
That's the pool worth positioning yourself into, before you land, not after.
